ASU police give out details on abduction in February ASU, from page B1 one or two of Hetherington's abductors, driving the truck, followed her car, which was being driven by a kidnapper while she lay on the back seat or on the floor.

The full-size pickup was described as an older model, reddish brown or brown, with a pattern of interlocking triangles painted on the side. It appeared to be customized and had no rear bumper. The victim, a freshman, was abducted from an area in the southeastern corner of ASU parking lot No. 59 on Feb. 2 about 1:30 p.m.

She was found the next day near Gila Bend. She had been beaten, and three-quarters of her right ear had been severed. Her car was burned. Hetherington was released from a hospital after her ear was reattached. Bess said he waited more than two months before releasing the latest information so police could investigate the details.

However, Bess said that police are not challenging the credibility of Hetherington's statements to them and that she and her husband, Thomas, have been cooperative with authorities. Bess said police still believe that Hetherington's abduction and mutilation was premeditated. However, he said there is no evidence that she knew her captors. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered through the Silent Witness program for information leading to the arrests of the captors. Information may be given by calling 261-8600 or 1-800-343-TIPS.

Legislators back lower limit for intoxication LEGISLATORS, from page B1 In California, he said, the change has led to increased DUI arrests and reduced DUI fatalities but has had little impact on prisons or on restaurants. Nichols also said three times as many fatalities occur at the 0.08 percent level than when alcohol isn't involved. At the 0.10 percent level, the deaths are four times higher, he said. The lower level "has a deterrent effect on the social drinker," Nichols added. He said that it shouldn't make those who have a drink or two at a co*cktail party fearful of arrest, but that it would make people less likely to have several.

A 150-pound person drinking three or four drinks on an empty stomach in one hour would have a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level, Nichols said. Rep. Don Aldridge, R-Lake Havasu City, disputed that estimate but gave none of his own. In similar debate last year, proponents of the lower level said it generally meant the difference between having four beers and having three. Although police have little physical evidence, Bess said, "We are not going to let this case go.
