An unpublished and unstudied early modern manuscript account book and ledger of plantations in Virginia owned by the English merchant and banker Robert Bristow (1634–1707). The book contains 94 folios in a variety of hands, including Bristow’s own. The volume includes accounts, ledgers, surveys of plantations, inventories of dwelling houses and stores, copies of land patents and other legal documents, and lists of indentured and enslaved laborers. The Huntington encompasses 207 acres of land in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley, amid a diverse botanical collection of rare plants, shrubs, and mature trees.

Art collections

While The Huntington does not function as a wildlife center, the lush landscape does provide a natural habitat for many birds—including red-shouldered hawks, California quail, Canada geese, and barn owls. Along with three different species of squirrels, it is not uncommon to see raccoons, possums, and, occasionally, coyotes on the property. In addition to 130 acres of themed gardens, The Huntington has significant holdings of botanical living collections, including orchids, camellias, cycads, and bonsai, examples of which may be found throughout the grounds. The Amorphophallus titanum, or Corpse Flower, is a popular attraction at many botanical gardens, including The Huntington. In its native Indonesian habitat, the population is declining due to habitat loss and degradation.

Simplicity Collection

In 1913, Mr. Henry “Edwards Huntington married Mrs. Arabella “Belle” Yarrington Worsham Huntington (Mrs. Collis P. Huntington). Arabella Huntington arrived at the San Marino technically on ranch first in April of 1913, in Los Angeles, CA. It was to perform the legal marriage at the Los Angeles Courthouse; evidence is in Mr. H. E. Huntington papers of receipts of Mrs. Arabella Huntington buying hats & fine bone china in Los Angeles. Then, they got married again in the summer of 1913, in the American Church in Paris, France. The Huntington's collections are displayed in permanent installations housed in the Huntington Art Gallery and Virginia Steele Scott Gallery of American Art.

Monthly lectures provide background on East Asian garden history. Exhibitions in the Studio for Lodging the Mind (Yu Yi Zhai 寓意齋) explore Chinese art and garden culture. And an artist-in-residence program ensures that Liu Fang Yuan constantly inspires new works of music, drama, and art. These programs and more are coordinated through The Huntington’s Center for East Asian Garden Studies, promoting innovative scholarship on the traditions of garden-making in China, Japan, and Korea. Another ancient Japanese art form can be found at the Harry Hirao Suiseki Court, where visitors can touch the suiseki or viewing stones. The Huntington's botanical gardens cover 120 acres (49ha) and showcase plants from around the world. Huntington worked to make them thrive in the generous California climate. The entry on the north is deliberately understated, providing functional spaces to accommodate visitors with parcels and luggage. All these survived the transformation of the house into a public art gallery in the late 1920s and, in the recent reorganization of the house, have been reemphasized.

Mrs. Arabella Huntington’s Butler’s Pantry Room was located just north of the Huntington’s Dining Room at the San Marino Ranch. There were once 42 cabinets of Mrs. Huntington’s fine bone china & porcelain plateware. These included Dinnerware, Luncheon ware, Breakfast plateware, Tea sets & tea plates, & “Breakfast sets”. A breakfast set included coffee pot, tea pot or chocolate pot with creamer, sugar, & tray. Also, in the Butler’s Pantry was 4 fancy enormous silver coffee & huge amount of tea sets.

By the 1920’s, at the San Marino Ranch, I feel the Huntingtons scaled down a lot on the amount of dinner courses compared to the Roaring 1890’s with so many courses. Probably 6 courses instead of 16 courses as in the San Francisco years. Screened–in Porch (SMR) (1st Floor ) – outside of the Servant’s entrance north side of west wing) Mrs. Larsen must have been overwhelmed with the great amount of fresh fruit & berries from the Huntington Family fruit orchard. Huge amounts were delivered often in the summer months at the ranch. This screen-in porch/ kitchen area would have been a perfect area for the fruit deliveries.

The stones found throughout Liu Fang Yuan are a type of limestone traditionally harvested from the bed of Lake Tai near Suzhou; today, they are quarried in various regions of China. For more than 1,200 years, these rocks have been renowned for their strange shapes and many holes. Particularly prized individual specimens, like the towering stone near the teahouse, Patching Up the Sky (Bu Tian 補天), were seen as embodying energy-like ethers, or qi. Liu Fang Yuan is inspired by the gardens of Suzhou, a city located near Shanghai in southeastern China. During the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), wealthy scholars and merchants there built tasteful private gardens combining architecture, waterworks, rockeries, plants, and calligraphy. Many of the features in Liu Fang Yuan are modeled on specific Suzhou gardens, eight of which are depicted in the woodcarvings in the Love for the Lotus Pavilion (Ai Lian Xie 愛蓮榭).

More than 50 artisans from Suzhou, China, provided the specialized carpentry, masonry, and tile work that give the garden its authenticity and beauty. The Stargazing Tower offers sweeping views of the lake and garden below and of the "borrowed landscape" beyond, including the San Gabriel Mountains and Mount Wilson Observatory, which inspired the pavilion's name.
