A military veteran who went on to serve as a firefighter and owned a local radio station revealed in his obituary that he was gay, a secret he said he held his entire life. After listing his career accolades and his survivors, Ryan's obituary, published June 8 in the Albany Times-Union, included a message that he wrote prior to his death.

Kate Winslet is putting an end to rumors of a feud between herself and director James Cameron. In an interview with Variety, the Academy Award-winning actress talked about her relationship with the "Titanic" and "Avatar" director and shut down the rumors of a rift between them, which allegedly stemmed from the comments she made about filming "Titanic" while promoting the movie in interviews. "There's a part of me that feels almost sad that stupid, speculative 'Titanic' stuff at the time overshadowed the actual relationship I have with him," said Winslet, who played Rose Dewitt Bukater in the 1997 film.

Phoenix Police Department engaged in civil rights violations, DOJ finds
A damning new report from the Justice Department released Thursday has concluded that the Phoenix Police Department has engaged in a "pattern or practice of conduct" that "deprives people of their rights under the Constitution and federal law." A DOJ investigation found "systemic problems" within the department's policies, training, supervision and accountability systems that were "perpetuated" for years. In its report, the Justice Department found a spate of civil rights violations, including "unjustified deadly force," discrimination in traffic and other enforcement, and unlawful detention, citations and arrests of the homeless.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich to stand trial in Russia on espionage charges
In a setback to Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, the Russian prosecutor's office announced Thursday he will stand trial on espionage charges, officially ending any future pre-detention appeals. "The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation has approved an indictment in the criminal case against US citizen Evan Gershkovich," the office said in a statement. "The criminal case has been sent to the Sverdlovsk Regional Court for consideration on the merits."
