Could the South have won the Civil War? ›

The South could win the war either by gaining military victory of its own or simply by continuing to exist. For as long as one Confederate flag flew defiantly somewhere, the South was winning. As long as the word “Confederate” had genuine meaning, the South was winning.

To achieve emancipation, the Union had to invade the South, defeat the Confederate armies, and occupy the Southern territory. The Civil War began as a purely military effort with limited political objectives.

The war would be fought primarily in the South, which gave the Confederates the advantages of the knowledge of the terrain and the support of the civilian population. Further, the vast coastline from Texas to Virginia offered ample opportunities to evade the Union blockade.
